CST, GACA Urge Outdoor Enthusiasts to Benefit from the Search and Rescue Service using ‘PLB’ Device

Riyadh: The Communications, Space and Technology Commission (CST) and the General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) are encouraging the outdoor enthusiasts who camp in the remote areas to use search and rescue devices known as Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) that rely on radio communication technology. These devices allow people to send distress signals that are detected by satellites in areas where mobile network coverage is limited or unavailable.

According to Saudi Press Agency, CST explained that the distress service is provided in cooperation with several authorities and providers, including GACA and Saudi Air Navigation Services, which offer full coverage across the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, even in remote areas. It can identify a user’s location and other information using satellites, helping search and rescue teams reach people in distress. Moreover, the distress signals are received by the Saudi Arabian Mission Control Center operated by the Saudi Air Navigation Services. The signal is then immediately forwarded to the Ministry of Interior’s National Center for Security Operations, which coordinates search and rescue operations with the relevant authorities.

CST added that PLB devices are among the most important safety tools for outdoor travel and camping in remote areas with no mobile network signal, as they allow users to send distress alerts.

It is worth noting that outdoor enthusiasts can easily acquire PLB devices and the required licenses from authorized dealers approved by CST, and a list of these dealers is available on CST’s website.
