Coalition Joint Forces Command: Royal Saudi Air Defense Forces Intercept, Destroy Drone Attempting to Enter Makkah Airspace

Makkah: The Royal Saudi Air Defense Forces successfully intercepted and destroyed a hostile drone launched by the Houthi militia attempting to breach the airspace of the Holy City of Makkah. The interception took place at 18:50 on Tuesday evening, September 15, 2026, in the southern region of Makkah.

According to Saudi Press Agency, this is the second attempt by the Houthi militia to target Makkah, the first being a ballistic missile attack on July 27, 2017. The drone attack was deemed an act of terrorism aimed at the birthplace of revelation and a destination revered by millions of Muslims worldwide. It attempted to instill fear among Umrah performers visiting the Grand Mosque and posed a threat to both citizens and residents.

Major General Turki Al-Malki, the official spokesperson for the Coalition to Restore Legitimacy in Yemen, condemned the attack, describing it as a deliberate provocation to Muslims worldwide. He emphasized that the security of the Two Holy Mosques and the safety of Umrah performers are non-negotiable priorities. The Joint Forces Command of the Coalition is committed to taking necessary actions against the Houthi militia to deter future hostile activities.
