Chameleons Thriving in Imam Turki bin Abdullah Royal Nature Reserve Highlight Ecological Adaptation

Riyadh: Imam Turki bin Abdullah Royal Nature Reserve: Imam Turki bin Abdullah Royal Nature Reserve exemplifies the richness of Saudi Arabia's natural environments, with extensive biodiversity linked to its vast 91,500 square kilometers of varied terrain, including dunes, plains, plateaus, and valleys. This diversity has created multiple habitats for desert wildlife species, including the chameleon, whose physical and behavioral characteristics demonstrate wildlife's ability to adapt to its environment, remain aware of its surroundings, obtain food, and cope with varying environmental conditions.

According to Saudi Press Agency, the chameleon can move its eyes independently, giving it a wide field of view to observe its surroundings. It also has a long, quick tongue it uses to catch insects, which make up a major part of its diet. It waits motionless for its prey before rapidly extending its tongue to capture it.

The chameleon can also change its skin color in response to several factors, including temperature, physiological state, and communication with other members of its species. Contrary to the common belief that this ability is used solely for camouflage, these color changes also reflect the complexity of the chameleon's adaptations to its surroundings.

Within the reserve's habitats, the chameleon moves among plants and rock formations, making use of the natural environment. This reflects the diversity and interconnectedness of the reserve's ecosystems and wildlife's ability to adapt to its habitats.

The presence of such species in their natural habitats reflects an aspect of the reserve's ecological value, which lies not only in the diversity of species but also in the interconnected roles they play within an integrated ecosystem, where plants, soil, water, and living organisms interact to help maintain habitat stability and sustainability.

The Imam Turki bin Abdullah Royal Nature Reserve Development Authority continues its efforts to protect ecosystems, expand vegetation cover, conserve natural habitats, and support wildlife sustainability, in line with the Kingdom's environmental targets and Saudi Vision 2030 while preserving biodiversity and natural resources for future generations.
