The Madinah Province is known for palm cultivation. There are many types of good dates, such as Ajwa, Safawi, Mejdoul, Anbara and Segai, all of which are eaten after they reach maturity, and there is a process to ensure their maturity, protection and consumer access at multiple stages. Farmers work to protect their crops from birds, which feed on palm stems, and which force some of them to devise a variety of means to repel such intruders and to mitigate sunlight rays in order to protect fruits from pollution and prevent them from falling off. One of the methods of preserving fruits is "bagging", used to preserve palm crops. Bagging means covering palm branches to protect them from weather conditions and pests, and to speed up the ripening process, which takes place at different times. Bagging continues for more than 45 days or until the fruits ripen and harvest begins. Source: Saudi Press Agency
