Aseer Region Leads in Private Museums Documenting Cultural Heritage

Accra:Aseer Aseer Region boasted 22 licensed private museums by the end of 2025, sharing the top spot with Makkah Region for the most in the Kingdom. This puts them ahead of Riyadh Region, which has 20 museums, and the Eastern Region, which has 17, as detailed in the Ministry of Culture's State of Culture in Saudi Arabia 2025 report.

According to Saudi Press Agency, these museums, established by individuals passionate about preserving heritage, house a variety of items such as agricultural tools, traditional weapons, coins, documents, and jewelry. They reflect the diverse cultural history of the region, shaped by its geographical features from the Sarawat highlands to the Tihama foothills.

Additionally, these museums enhance Aseer's tourism by complementing its historical sites and cultural offerings. They can be integrated into travel itineraries, providing visitors with a deeper understanding of the region's heritage.

Across Saudi Arabia, the number of licensed private museums increased to 118 by the end of 2025, up from 99 the previous year. Aseer Region's museums represent approximately 18.6% of the total. A survey of 39 private museums revealed that 41% hold between 100 and 5,000 items, while another 41% have collections exceeding 10,000 items. However, many museums lack a digital presence, with about 60% having no website and 66% absent from social media, highlighting the need for improved digital engagement.
