Riyadh: Aramco, a global leader in the energy sector, is taking a significant step forward in technological innovation by partnering with NVIDIA to enhance quantum computing capabilities. This collaboration aims to address the complex challenges faced by the energy industry, particularly in exploring new reserves and processing seismic data with increased accuracy.
According to Saudi Press Agency, Aramco’s Upstream Digital Center (UDC) is spearheading a digital transformation initiative inspired by the historical Dammam 7 oil well. This initiative includes the development of the Dammam-7Q (DMM7Q) quantum computing emulator, accelerated by NVIDIA’s graphical processing units (GPUs), making it one of the largest in the region.
Quantum computing is set to revolutionize how industries, including energy, tackle complex problems. The UDC, through its collaboration with NVIDIA, is focused on leveraging quantum computing to innovate and harness the capabilities of future hybrid supercomputers. UDC Vice President Ashraf Al-Tahini emphasized the importance of this collaboration in advancing upstream computing.
In recent projects with NVIDIA, Aramco has utilized a quantum Hadamard edge detection algorithm, designed to exploit quantum processors’ potential to improve subsurface imaging details significantly. The future of supercomputing lies in hybrid architectures, which combine various technologies to expand computational capabilities.
Tim Costa, Senior Director at NVIDIA, highlighted the promise of quantum algorithms and the need for coordinating both quantum and conventional supercomputing. Aramco is leveraging the NVIDIA CUDA-Q platform to run GPU-accelerated emulations of future quantum hardware, aiding in the development and assessment of quantum algorithms for geosciences.
CUDA-Q has enabled Aramco to explore how quantum algorithms will operate on hybrid systems, utilizing both conventional processors and quantum hardware. This approach simplifies computational task distribution across different coprocessors, allowing Aramco to emulate up to 30 qubits per GPU and scale further with multiple GPUs on the Dammam-7 Supercomputer.
This collaboration between Aramco and NVIDIA marks a significant advancement in exploring hybrid quantum-classical supercomputers, showcasing the transformative potential of quantum computing in the energy sector.
