Arab League Secretary-General Urges Slovenia, EU to Reconsider Palestine Recognition Shift

Riyadh: Secretary-General of the League of Arab States Nabil Fahmy sent two official letters to Slovenian Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Tone Kajzer and European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission Kaja Kallas following Slovenia's announcement of its intention to withdraw its recognition of the State of Palestine and relocate its embassy to occupied Jerusalem.

According to Saudi Press Agency, Fahmy urged the Slovenian government to reconsider the move. He stressed that there is no basis under international law for withdrawing recognition of the State of Palestine and that relocating the embassy to Jerusalem would constitute a violation of United Nations Security Council resolutions and international law.

He added that his letter to Kallas warned of the serious implications of the move and the possibility that it could encourage other countries to follow the same course, thereby weakening the European position in support of the two-state solution.

The secretary-general said the League of Arab States looks to the European Union to reaffirm that recognition of the State of Palestine is irreversible and that relocating embassies to Jerusalem runs counter to the unified European position and international legitimacy resolutions. He stressed that such steps come at a time when the Palestinian people are facing extremely difficult humanitarian conditions. He reaffirmed the league's commitment to supporting the two-state solution and the Arab Peace Initiative while continuing dialogue with its European partners on that basis.
