Aqabat al-baha: In the heart of the mountains, where rugged terrain meets the demands of development, Aqabat Al-Baha emerges as more than just a road. It is a national example of how infrastructure can reshape geography, shorten travel distances, and elevate both safety and quality of life.
According to Saudi Press Agency, Director General of the Ministry of Transport and Logistics Services' branch in Al-Baha Region, Eng. Mesfer Al-Malki, stated that Aqabat Al-Baha features advanced engineering solutions designed to suit its mountainous landscape. The road stretches about 46 kilometers, including 25 tunnels, 52 bridges, and several culverts that play a critical role in draining rainwater and protecting the road from floods and landslides.
Al-Malki emphasized that each element was designed to the highest safety and sustainability standards, ensuring smooth traffic flow in all weather conditions. Along the route, the comprehensive control center is a core part of the route's operational system. Far from a temporary initiative, the center continuously monitors the road, identifies high-risk locations, coordinates swiftly with relevant authorities, and responds immediately to traffic accidents, rockfalls, and other emergencies, all designed to minimize response time and reduce risk.
The control center operates through effective institutional coordination among multiple government entities, including the regional branch of the Ministry of Transport, Al-Baha Municipality, the Saudi Red Crescent Authority, the Saudi Civil Defense, and the Al-Baha traffic department. This integrated approach, Al-Malki said, represents an advanced model for managing mountainous roads, unifying efforts and speeding up decision-making.
A key element of the safety system is the ambulance helipad linked to the control center, he stated. This facility enables rapid evacuation of critically injured individuals, particularly in mountainous areas where urgent intervention is essential, thereby significantly increasing the likelihood of survival and reducing the impact of accidents.
Since its construction in 1404 AH, Aqabat Al-Baha has connected the Al-Sarah and Tihama areas, providing a safe passage for travelers, supporting economic and tourism activities, and serving local residents and visitors in a region known for its natural diversity and unique mountainous terrain. The road's experience has set a comprehensive benchmark for modern highways, combining advanced engineering, sustainable maintenance, intelligent operation, and an integrated safety system that covers monitoring, coordination, and rapid response both on the ground and from the air.
