An earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale struck the city of Baoshan in southwest China's Yunnan Province, injuring three people and damaging infrastructure.

According to the Chinese "Xinhua" News Agency, the local authorities launched a third-level emergency response and rescue teams rushed to the quake-hit area.

A local report stated that three people were slightly injured by the earthquake and were taken to hospital for medical treatment, while all their injuries were not embarrassing.

Baoshan Deputy Mayor Zhang Yunyi said at a press conference Wednesday morning that the quake caused varying damage to residential homes, water supply, electricity, traffic, communications and other infrastructure facilities in and around the epicenter area.

More than 2,400 people have been sent to the quake-affected area for search and rescue operations, and a total of 365 tents, 734 folding beds and 1,470 cotton quilts have been allocated to the affected areas, after 2,805 houses were damaged, and more than 11,000 local residents have been moved to more places, Zhang added.

The Baoshan earthquake relief headquarters will continue to track and monitor the disaster situation and identify potential geological disaster risks, while ensuring adequate access to electricity, communications and traffic in the affected areas, to restore the local order of work and production as soon as possible.
