King Abdulaziz Port’s 2022 Container Throughput Hit 2 Million Mark

Dammam, January 08, 2023, SPA -- King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam and its container terminal operator Saudi Global Ports (SGP) have ended the year 2022 with the highest annual container figures on record, handling 2,038,787 TEUs at a 15% growth rate compared to 1,780,348 TEUs in 2021.

The strong performance coincides with the transformative evolution of Saudi ports into world-class centers of excellence offering best-in-class services and customer experience in line with the ambitions of the National Transport and Logistics Strategy (NTLS) to position the Kingdom as a global logistics hub connecting three major continents.

Post the takeover of the port’s first and second container terminals’ operations, SGP has propelled the Kingdom’s northern trade gateway into the big league through unmatched competitive capabilities and increased maritime connectivity besides deploying cutting-edge technologies to accelerate the journey towards sustainability, automation, and efficiency.

Built on the directives of the Late King Abdulaziz bin Abdulrahman Al-Saud to serve the Kingdom’s then-nascent oil industry, the Dammam-based port is the nation’s foremost trade hub on the Arabian Gulf coast as well as the leading port of entry into the Eastern and Central Regions.

Sprawling an area of 19 square kilometers, the port features 43 fully-equipped berths, purpose-built terminals, and state-of-the-art equipment capable of receiving giant vessels and processing 105 million tons of cargo and containers while also housing a modern shipyard that includes two floating docks which can service ships up to 215 meters long.
