The Ministry of Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning announced plans to set up a fish market at Askar fishhermen's jetty.
Undersecretary for Agriculture and Marine Resources Shaikh Mohammed bin Ahmed Al-Khalifa unveiled the project as he inspected progress of work at Askar fishermen's jetty , accompanied by several officials.
The Ministry has already announced plans to set up fish markets at the Hidd and Budaiya jetties. The undersecretary announced that additional services would be provided at the Askar jetty in partnership with the private sector, and gave directives to assess the needs of fishermen.
He underlined the Government's keenness on developing fishermen's jetties and enhance the standard of services, stressing the vital strategic role of the sector in promoting Bahrain's food security.
The Askar jetty serves 135 fishermen, in addition to other companies which collects the catch of crabs, said Shaikh Mohammed bin Ahmed Al-Khalifa, noting the presence of a Coastguard employees' offiice and other facilities. He stressed the crucial importance of preserving the long-standing profession and meeting the needs of fishermen in terms of services and facilities.
