Saudi Arabia Participates in 61st WIPO General Assembly

Riyadh,  The Kingdom, represented by the Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property, virtually participates in the meeting of the 61st General Assembly of Member States of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) held at its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, during the period from September 21 to September 25, 2020. Saudi Arabia delegation participating in the Assembly was headed by Dr. Abdulaziz Al-Swailem, CEO of the Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property, and a number of officials of the Authority. Where Saudi Arabia’s speech was delivered by the Kingdom’s ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva, Dr. Abdulaziz Al-Wasil.
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia congratulated Mr. Darren Tang on his appointment as Director-General of the World Intellectual Property Organization and expressed the Kingdom’s thanks to Mr. Francis Gary for the efforts he had made throughout his leadership of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), praising the organization’s direction in using artificial intelligence technology in its work and services.
In its speech, the Kingdom indicated the deposit of the instrument of accession to the ‘Locarno Agreement’ and the ‘Vienna Agreement’, stressing that it aims to join many treaties at the end of this year, implying that the Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property has worked to establish a national committee for the enforcement of intellectual property rights and the creation and development of some property laws Intellectual.
The Kingdom affirmed that the Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property is working to build respect for intellectual property rights, as it carried out several inspection campaigns that resulted in the monitoring of more than 1,000 websites, the blocking of 230 violating sites, the conduct of a number of inspection campaigns for more than 300 stores, and the confiscation of more than 5,000 articles that violated the rights. Intellectual property.
In conclusion, the Kingdom referred to the organization of the Global Forum for Intellectual Property Challenges on the sidelines of the Kingdom’s hosting of the G20 Presidential Year.
