Trump arrives in Brussels for NATO summit

BAGHDAD, US President Donald Trump arrived in Brussels on Friday for a NATO summit.

"Several countries in the alliance are not meeting their defense spending obligations," Trump said before leaving Washington. He said his upcoming summit with Putin in Helsinki could be "easier" on his European tour.

"Frankly, Putin may be the easiest among all of them, who would have thought that?" Trump said, referring to his upcoming European tour, including his first bilateral summit with Putin on Monday in Helsinki.

"NATO does not treat us fairly, but I think we will find a solution, we pay very much and they pay very little," he said, "but we will reach a solution and all countries will be happy."

In Brussels, Trump will meet on Wednesday and Thursday with leaders of the 29 NATO member states, hoping to show a scene of unity despite the apparent tension among the transatlantic allies on a number of issues.

In 2018, the US contribution to the NATO budget was about 70 percent of the total military expenditures of the alliance, "he said.
