Turkish Army: 49 Kurdish Fighters Neutralized Last Week Inside Turkey And Northern Iraq

BAGHDAD, The Turkish army announced the neutralization of 49 Kurdish fighters in military operations during the last week inside the country and northern Iraq.

"The continued military operations in northern Iraq and the south-eastern regions have resulted in the neutralization of 49 terrorist elements of the PKK organization," the Turkish chief of staff said in a statement.

"The operations carried out between June 29 and July 5 targeted a number of terrorist organizations in northern Iraq and their transit routes into the Turkish interior," the statement said.

The statement added that four Turkish soldiers were subjected to injuries of varying degrees during the operations.

Turkish planes, in cooperation with the Turkish security services and police, have been cracking down PKK elements inside and outside the country for two years to crack down on the organization, which Turkey says is carrying out terrorist attacks against Turkish civilians and soldiers in various Turkish states.

The PKK, seen by the United States, the European Union and Turkey as a terrorist organization, has waged a three-decade insurgency in Turkey's mainly Kurdish southeast, killing 40,000 people.
