Jeddah, King Abdulaziz University ranked 33rd among the top 100 universities in the world in registering patents at the US Patent and Trademark Office, after registering 71 patents, marking a 200-percent increase compared with last year that witnessed joining the list for the first time with registering 34 patents that guaranteed it the 82nd rank globally.
The university’s patents in 2020 issued by the office totaled 71, while the university deposited 92 files of patents and permissions for 22 patents to be issued within two months. The number of ideas presented in 2020 to the Knowledge Economy and Technology Transfer Center at the university exceeded 322, including 126 approved ideas and signing 65 contracts to develop them.
The issued patents are part of the university’s research priorities, where 27 patents were registered in the healthcare sector, 22 in the field of development industries, 18 in natural resources development, and four in artificial intelligence and information technology.
Around 85 male and female inventors participated in these innovations from 12 faculties of the university, where inventors of the Engineering Faculty accounted for 24 patents, while inventors at the Faculty of Pharmacy registered 19 patents and Faculty of Science inventors registered 15 patents.
